I have been working on (or near) Debian for over five years. I have been a member of several packaging teams, but contribute peripherally to several others without team membership as need arises.
Familiar with the workings of the Debian development process, Debian Policy and the FHS, Debian repository maintenance; limited skills in Debian packaging; well versed with the Debian community; understanding of Debian tools and infrastructure. Hardware platforms I have used Debian on include: PC (IA32, AMD64), Apple PowerPC, Sun SPARC, Digital Alpha, Lemote Loongson (Mipsel), and Openmoko Freerunner (ARM).
2006 -
gNewSense is the Free Software Foundations flagship GNU/Linux distribution. I have been contributing to gNewSense since just before its 1.0 release and from mid 2008 until late 2011 I was the project leader.
Assisted the web team with maintaining website and wiki (assisted with several software migrations in the process); co author of various build systems; system administrator for *.gnewsense.org servers, work with FSF sys admins to ensure availability of project resources; maintain software distribution infrastructure; collaborating with upstream projects to merge changes where necessary; managing community communications channels, corresponding with other community leaders through email, telephone, and in person; coordinate with organisations who offer hosting to ensure a stable mirror network, work with organisations who provide build server hardware to ensure it is integrated correctly.
March 2010 - April 2011
Joined the tech team as one of 3 'Support Administrators' providing desktop support to staff with a range of skill levels running MacOS X, Windows (XP/7), and Centos(5), as well as limited system administration work on core and non core services.
As part of infrastructure related duties, I worked with the DNS and DHCP servers; various websites and web services (including sites written in Ruby on Rails, Merb and PHP); scheduled and performed off-siting of backup tapes; built the OS image to run the next generation of workstations and render nodes and did several test deployments; dealt with hardware failures, including warranty claims and installation of new hardware.. For the desktop support side, I was required to debug and support various in house and 3rd party pieces of software; built a 'golden image' for our XP workstations using clonezilla; performed MacOS imaging; built several pieces of custom software, including building several .rpm packages; debugged kernel and software problems, improved the teams documentation - internal and user facing.
September 2007 - December 2008
Initially hired to handle upgrade of a key server, the contract was maintained after the migration to provide assistance to the site system administrator.
Worked with client to define and implement server migration strategy, installed and commissioned mission critical business server including data migration while ensuring minimum downtime during system migration; worked with Quantums IT department to ensure smooth operations; worked with various vendors on behalf of Quantum; general "break fix" of issues with the test network; Small amounts of user support and software customisation and integration.
July 2007 - August 2007
Took part in readying 450 computer systems (including building up hardware, installing the OS, configuration, sorting and loading them onto a container); spent four weeks spent in Papua New Guinea doing IT work and training at Goroka General Hospital.
Assisted with creation of "gold" image for installing on desktops and laptops, oversaw the installation of systems, rebuilt failing PCs to minimise 'lost' hardware due to damaged components; assisted with unloading and securing of IT equipment in Goroka; adjusting system configuration to meet changing requirements; configuration of centralised login system and centralised management tools; provided training in how to do configuration and deployments.
2005 - 2009
